Selling the empty days of September
August is full whatever you do. September and October are where a Greek tourism business's year is actually won or lost. Why the shoulder season needs its own page, its own message and its own guests.
It is the middle of August. Every room is taken, the boat is full, the tables are booked. Nothing you do this week will change this month's revenue.
What will change the year is the calendar a few weeks from now. In September and early October, the weather is still warm, the sea is at its warmest, and a lot of Greek tourism businesses are half empty. Those are the days that decide whether the season was good or merely busy.
The mistake is to sell them the way August sells itself.
September guests are different people
The families have gone back to school. The people who travel in September are largely:
- couples and older travellers who avoid crowds and heat;
- divers, walkers and cyclists, for whom September is simply the best month;
- Greeks from the cities taking a long weekend after the summer rush;
- people who book late, because they decide when they see the forecast.
They look for different things. They search for quiet, walks, diving in September, weekend break, not family pool. They respond to different offers: a third night, a late checkout, a guided walk, rather than a kids' club.
What to do this week, while you are full
- Write a September page. On your own site, in the languages your September guests speak. What the weather is like, what is still open, what is better than in August. Specific facts, not "a magical time to visit".
- Make the offer concrete. "Stay three nights, the third is on us, from 7 September to 11 October." A clear offer with dates is easier to share and easier to find than "special prices".
- Tell last year's guests. The cheapest September booking is someone who already knows you. A short email to past guests who came outside peak season is worth more than an ad.
- Open your calendar for short stays. If August requires a seven-night minimum, September should not.
- Answer the late bookers. September guests often book days ahead and at night. The site has to take the booking or the request without a phone call.
The website has to do the late-night selling
On the Mykonos Diving Center website we rebuilt, 45% of bookings arrive outside office hours, and mobile conversion rose from 12% to 38%. For shoulder-season guests who decide on a Tuesday evening to travel on Friday, that is the whole game: the site answers, and the booking is made before they look elsewhere.
The Olea Suites site takes booking requests in English and Greek, with a page per suite. A September page and offer sit naturally alongside that, rather than being buried in a news post.

Hotels, agencies and local operators who send you guests in August are just as useful in September — and often have more time to talk. We wrote about keeping those relationships healthy in who sent this customer?.
The honest version
Some places genuinely close in September, and should. But if you are open and half empty, the gap is rarely price. It is usually that the people who would love September have never been told what you offer in it. If you want help telling them, August is exactly the right time to plan it.
